Writers’ Block

This month’s Inscribe theme is writers’ block. You can read my thoughts on the subject here.  Tonight I am off to my writers’ group meeting. I didn’t have anything to submit, but look forward to visiting with my critique partners and going over their work with them. Another group I’m part of meets next week; hopefully I’ll have something ready for that gathering. It’s been a while.

I found a couple of good quotes for your enjoyment. Cheers!

“A writer is somebody for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.” (Thomas Mann)

“Writing is not hard. Just get paper and pencil, sit down, and write as it occurs to you. The writing is easy–it’s the occurring that’s hard.”
(Stephen Leacock)

You Deserve a Break Today

My blog post title hearkens back to a jingle many readers may recall from 1970s and ’80s McDonald’s commercials (if you missed that epic period, for one example, see here). Regardless of where the phrase originated (and I don’t know that McDonald’s can claim that fame), the sentiment is true: we can all use a break in the midst of our days.

As I mentioned in my last post, I write for Inscribe Writers’ Online. Last month’s Inscribe theme has been around the subject of taking a break from writing. You can find my thoughts expressed here.

Today I’m enjoying a bit of a break. For the first time I can remember in months, I’m alone at home. My mom has taken off on a two-week holiday with her sister, my girls are on their way home from a birthday party sleepover, my husband and son are on their way home from a canoe trip to Algonquin Park. In about an hour, they’ll all descend on me. But while I’ve been on my own, I’ve managed to write four critiques for my writers’ group, write a response to a lengthy e-mail from a friend and send a couple of other important e-mails I’d been putting off. I’ve completed this post and am going to start writing my August post for Inscribe. I’ve let my Facebook friends know that I’m taking a break from them for the next two weeks. Productivity is the goal, and I’ve got a list.

But I’m scheduling breaks for each day and I still have to work  at my day job. My breaks will include book club, lunch with a friend, a family reunion, a playdate for my dog and his friends, and catching up on some reading 🙂

How are you enjoying your break today?
